Abstract keynote address:

“Zeitenwende”?

A global political perspective on Germany’s 2025 general election

Following Russia’s attack on Ukraine in February 2022, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke of a Zeitenwende – a turning point or epochal tectonic shift – in German foreign policy and global politics.

Three years on, while Putin continues to wage war in neighbouring Ukraine, a fragile ceasefire deal has put the hostilities in the Middle East temporarily on hold, and Donald Trump is back at the White House, Germans are preparing to go to the polls in a snap general election.

How does the changing global landscape shape German politics? What place will Germany occupy in the new world order currently under construction? These are but two central questions the keynote seeks to engage with.

หลังจากการโจมตีของรัสเซียต่อยูเครนในเดือนกุมภาพันธ์ 2022 นายกรัฐมนตรีเยอรมนี โอลาฟ โชลซ์ ได้กล่าวถึง Zeitenwende ซึ่งหมายถึงจุดเปลี่ยนหรือการเปลี่ยนแปลงครั้งสำคัญในนโยบายต่างประเทศของเยอรมนีและการเมืองโลก

Keynote speaker

• Dr.Tobias Metzler (DE)

Dr. Tobias Metzler is currently the Director of the City Library in Korbach, Germany and has an extensive academic background in global and political studies. He studied history, political science, Judaic studies, and German philology at Berlin, Yale and Jerusalem, and completed his doctorate at the University of Southampton. He was a Fellow of the Parkes Institute for Jewish and Non-Jewish Relations at the University of Southampton and a Visiting Fellow at the University of Oxford.

Dr. Metzler previously served as Assistant Professor in global history and transnational studies at Thammasat University in Bangkok. Having lived in Thailand for many years, he gained first-hand insights into the political instability and democratic struggles in the region.

In his publications and public interventions, Dr. Metzler advocates the importance of active engagement for the functioning of democracies.

With his nuanced approach to global politics, democracy, and international relations, Dr. Metzler will offer a thought-provoking perspective during this forum.

ดร. โทเบียส เมตซ์เลอร์ ปัจจุบันดำรงตำแหน่งผู้อำนวยการห้องสมุดเมืองคอร์บัค ประเทศเยอรมนี และมีพื้นฐานทางวิชาการที่กว้างขวางในด้านประวัติศาสตร์และการเมืองโลก เขาได้ศึกษาประวัติศาสตร์ รัฐศาสตร์ ยิวศึกษา และวรรณคดีเยอรมัน ที่มหาวิทยาลัยเบอร์ลิน, เยล และเยรูซาเล็ม รวมถึงสำเร็จปริญญาเอกจากมหาวิทยาลัยเซาแทมป์ตัน นอกจากนี้ยังเคยเป็น Fellow ของสถาบัน Parkes Institute for Jewish and Non-Jewish Relations ที่มหาวิทยาลัยเซาแทมป์ตัน และ Visiting Fellow ที่มหาวิทยาลัยอ็อกซ์ฟอร์ด

ดร. เมตซ์เลอร์เคยดำรงตำแหน่งผู้ช่วยศาสตราจารย์ด้านประวัติศาสตร์โลกและการศึกษาข้ามชาติที่มหาวิทยาลัยธรรมศาสตร์ กรุงเทพฯ โดยเขาได้ใช้ชีวิตในประเทศไทยมาหลายปี ทำให้เขาได้สัมผัสกับปัญหาความไม่มั่นคงทางการเมืองและการต่อสู้เพื่อประชาธิปไตยในภูมิภาคนี้โดยตรง

ในงานเขียนและการแสดงความคิดเห็นต่อสาธารณะ ดร. เมตซ์เลอร์ได้เน้นย้ำถึงความสำคัญของการมีส่วนร่วมอย่างแข็งขันเพื่อให้ประชาธิปไตยสามารถทำงานได้อย่างมีประสิทธิภาพ
